CLOCS wins 2015 Premier Award

8 December 2015

The Transport for London CLOCS programme has won the 2015 Prince Michael International Road Safety Premier Award.

Between 2008 and 2014, 53% of all cycling fatalities in London involved a heavy goods vehicle, despite these vehicles making up just 4% of road miles travelled. Construction Logistics and Cyclist Safety (CLOCS) is an industry-led movement to protect the most vulnerable road users, such as cyclists and pedestrians.

Following research by TRL the CLOCS Programme was developed, focusing on three key areas:

  • improving the safety of HGVs
  • addressing the imbalance between workplace and work-related road safety
  • establishing common national standards for managing work related road safety.

The CLOCS Standard is the first industry-led single national standard for work related road safety developed by clients, operators and contractors and supported by local authorities. The involvement of clients has been key to the wide adoption of the Standard.

It brings the construction logistics industry together to revolutionise the management of work related road risk (WRRR) and ensure a road safety culture is embedded across the industry. Working together can help protect pedestrians, cyclists, motorcyclists and other road users who share the roads with construction vehicles.

Adrian Walsh, Director of The Prince Michael Awards, said, “The work of CLOCS and the Fleet Operator Recognition Scheme (FORS) – the 2014 Fleet Safety winner – complement each other to improve road safety. Where CLOCS provides clients with ready made structures for recognisable safety standards, FORS provides fleet operators with the opportunity to both clearly demonstrate and improve their own safety performance.”
