Global road safety award for the International Transport Forum

6 December 2016

The esteemed Decade of Action Special Award for Road Safety for 2017 goes to the International Transport Forum (ITF). The organisation is being honoured for its leadership in improving delivery of road safety across the world and its recent report “Zero Road Deaths and Serious Injuries: Leading a Paradigm Shift in Road Safety specifically. “The new report comes at a time when the world needs to change up a gear or two to accelerate efforts to reduce the unacceptable toll of death and serious injury on our roads”, said Prince Michael of Kent, patron of the award. “It is a most welcome addition to the all-important bank of knowledge available to governments and is a fine example of the leadership shown by ITF.” The Prince will present the Special Award to ITF Secretary-General José Viegas and Iain Cameron (Australia), chairman of the ITF Working Group that produced the study, at a lunch with leading international road safety professionals on 13th December in London, UK.

Since its launch, the report has been accessed online over 1 600 times and is currently being translated into Spanish on the initiative of Chile’s transport ministry. The report’s findings have also been - and continue to be - presented at numerous international meetings. Russia’s Ministry of Transport is holding six conferences in different parts of the country to introduce the report’s findings to Russian road safety stakeholders. An Inter-Parliamentary Assembly hearing on road safety was held back-to-back with the first conference in St Petersburg on 30 September and included presentations from ITF Working Group members. The Annual Meeting of the German Council on Road Safety (DVR), an umbrella organisation of road safety stakeholders, will put the “Zero Road Deaths” report at the centre of its deliberations on 7th December in Berlin.
