Shell receives Royal Award
Royal Dutch Shell has been selected to receive the prestigious Prince Michael International Road Safety Award.
Presenting the award during his visit to Shell Eco-marathon Europe 2013, His Royal Highness Prince Michael of Kent said, ‘In addition to making your own people and the communities in which you operate much safer when on the road, you are an outstanding example to your industry and to the private sector. You are also showing the way to many national governments.’
Commenting further on Shell’s remarkable commitment he added, “The importance of road safety to Shell is shown in many areas of its businesses from transport through to its community care programmes.”
At Shell, safety is always the top priority. The business aims for zero fatalities and no incidents that harm people, or put its neighbours or facilities at risk.
In addition to a strict internal road safety regime for its own people and contractors, Shell has committed support for the UN led Global Decade of Action, which aims to save five million lives by 2020, through its community and corporate programmes.
Receiving the award, during the Shell Early Career Professionals Conference at Shell Eco-marathon, Chief Executive Officer, Peter Voser, said, “Shell is honoured to be this year’s recipient of the Prince Michael International Road Safety Award. The award recognizes the significant progress Shell’s employees and contractors have made in improving our road safety record, and the focus we put on safety each and every day throughout our global operations.”
Whether it is transporting fuel to one of its customers, delivering equipment to construction projects or simply travelling to meetings, safe road transportation is integral to Shell’s business. Its global road safety programme focuses on improving the safety of drivers – staff and contractors – and contributing to road safety in the communities where it operates.
The programme has resulted in a significant improvement in Shell’s road safety performance. Central to the programme’s success are:
- The establishment of the global road safety expertise centre
- Shell’s global road safety standards
- Leadership and commitment
- Working in partnerships across the more than 70 countries in which the company operates
