Lincolnshire wins international road safety award

26 October 2010

Lincolnshire Road Safety Partnership (LRSP) has won the Prince Michael International Road Safety Award for Education and Training. The Partnership received the honour for its young driver initiative, 2fast2soon.

Drivers and passengers aged between 17-24 years are more likely to be killed or seriously injured on Britain’s roads than any other aged group.

Since 2008, the 2fast2soon programme has reached more than 5,000 young drivers in Lincolnshire, contributing to a 50% reduction in road deaths among 17-24 year olds in the County.

The 2fast2soon programme  runs in three phases. It begins with a realistic drama based on true events from serious and fatal road traffic collisions. Real crash victims present the show with members of the emergency services, who rouse emotions to create a lasting impression on the audience.

Their messages are reinforced in workshops in phase two, where the young drivers draft and sign a safe-driving charter. In phase three they receive practical driving coaching from experienced trainers. This includes lessons in how to avoid hazardous conditions, and prevent and control skids.

The award was presented on Tuesday 19 October, at the Louth Playgoers Riverhead Theatre, Lincolnshire.
