Royal acclaim for Village 30 scheme

30 November 2010

Hampshire County Council has won a Prince Michael International Road Safety Award for its Village 30 initiative – a scheme that has introduced 30 mph speed limits in 112 villages in the county.

Judges agreed that the initiative met all six of the award criteria: innovation, achievement, commitment, evidence based, replicable, and sustainable.

Combining safety engineering, education and enforcement, Village 30 resulted in a steady reduction in driving speeds. Initial monitoring of the areas shows an average 9% reduction in speeds and an average reduction in road traffic accidents of 80%.
