Royal award for 20 years of innovation

7 December 2010

The automotive industry has won a special award for its collective contribution to road safety over the last 20 years.

Since 1989, the number of people killed on the UK’s has roads has fallen significantly. Car occupant deaths alone have fallen by 56%. The Department for Transport largely attributes this to improved vehicle safety.

A report, Saving lives: Twenty years of automotive innovation, briefly illustrates how the industry has raised safety standards. It has a timeline, showing when key systems came to market, and contributions from leading commentators.

The award was presented at the Prince Michael International Road Safety Awards 2010, held at the Savoy, London, on 7 December.
