St Petersburg venue for Decade Forum

20 March 2013

The 2013 Decade of Action Policy & Donor Forum will be held in St Petersburg, Russia, with high level participation from the Russian Government.

The annual Forum, co-organised by the Road Safety Fund and the Commission for Global Road Safety, will bring together policymakers, private sector companies, philanthropies and NGOs at the Astoria Hotel, St Petersburg, on Tuesday 7th May 2013. During the event HRH Prince Michael of Kent will present his second Decade of Action Award and a number of further awards for achievement and innovation. His first Decade Award went to The Mayor of New York City, Hon. Michael R. Bloomberg in recognition of his leadership and philanthropy in global road traffic injury prevention.

The theme of the event, which will take place during the 2nd UN Global Road Safety Week, is 'Safe Roads for All'. The conference will have a particular focus on safe walking as a right for all and the need to include road injury prevention in the post 2015 Sustainable Development Goals. The event will be integrated with the international 'Long Short Walk' campaign and the 'Walk for Life' pedestrian safety initiative which has been running across the Russian Federation during 2012 and 2013.

The host of the meeting will be Victor Kiryanov, Deputy Minister of the Interior of the Russian Federation, who is responsible for transport safety in Russia. He was the key architect of the 2009 First Global Ministerial Conference on Road Safety, hosted by the Russian Federation in Moscow, and the 2010 UN General Assembly Resolution which approved the UN Decade of Action for Road Safety . The event will also see the Chairman of the Commission for Global Road Safety, Lord Robertson of Port Ellen, launch a new 'Make Roads Safe' report.
