Royal Award during cycle safety operation in London

Following the deaths of six cyclists and In a week when cycle safety hit the headlines again, the London the Evening Standard reports that a total of 2,500 officers from the Met’s Traffic Command and the Mayor-funded Safer Transport Command have ben involved in the operation which will last for a few weeks. They are stopping lorries and cars and where there is unsafe driving they are taken off the road. The operation also targets unsafe cyclists.

During the week the police-led Exchanging Places scheme also received a Prince Michael International Award.

Exchanging Places is an innovative programme addressing the most common cause of cyclist fatalities and serious injuries - collisions with large goods vehicles (LGVs). Cyclists are given the opportunity to occupy the driver’s seat of an LGV to see its blind spots first hand. Police officers from the Metropolitan Police Traffic Command meet cyclists face to face to discuss how they deal with such collisions to reinforce the physical experience and then demonstrate tactics to give people the skills and confidence to cycle safely
