Prince Michael honours MIROS with International Award

7 May 2014

Road safety improvement is the cornerstone of the Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (MIROS), a statutory body under Malaysia’s Transport Ministry. Through research, development, evaluation and influencing policy, MIROS has helped create safer roads, vehicles and road users and reduce road deaths and injuries in Malaysia and other Southeast Asian nations (ASEAN).

MIROS is the leading regional research centre and an outstanding example of how a research centre should be at the heart of a national road safety programme. It is committed to developing and implementing innovative approaches to road safety challenges. Examples of MIROS’s achievements are many and include new projects like overcoming long-standing problems of sharing the traffic police’s national crash database to support road safety research and development, facilitating and improving interventions and undertaking crash reconstruction to improve road safety.

Other national and regional programmes led by MIROS include:

  • M-ROADS - a database management system, to undertake detailed scientific analyses, multi-dimensional cross-tabulation, location mapping via Google Maps, kilometre post-analysis, identification and ranking of accident-prone areas.
  • In-depth crash investigation and reconstruction.
  • Malaysian Vehicle Safety Programme (MyVAP) and Southeast Asian New Car Assessment Programme (ASEAN NCAP).
  • iRAP’s ASEAN Centre of Excellence.
