HRH Prince Michael of Kent visits TRL

6 April 2015

Following the presentation to TRL of the Prince Michael International Road Safety Premier Award for the development of hazard perception testing in the UK, our Royal Patron Prince Michael visited the Road Safety team at TRL to find out more about their work. He was shown some of the video clips similar to those used in the GB Driving Theory Test.

The hazard perception test – a key TRL innovation built on basic and applied research, and evaluated as part of the Cohort II study of learner and novice drivers, has been associated with an 11% drop in some types of on-road collisions in this high risk group.

Another topic of discussion was work-related road safety. The Prince heard about TRL’s extensive work in this area including early work to define the scale of the issue (around 30% of injury collisions in the UK involve someone driving or riding for work at the time) and more recent work to understand how organisations can reduce the risk their drivers represent, both to their own safety and to the safety of other road users.
