Reported road casualties Great Britain 2014 annual report

24 September 2015

The government has published the Reported Road Casualties Great Britain: annual report 2014.

This report includes detailed statistics about the circumstances of personal injury accidents in 2014.

The main results for 2014 were:

  • Contributory factors to reported road accidents: 2014
  • Modelling the impact of the weather on road casualty statistics
  • Self-reported drink and drug driving: findings from the Crime Survey for England and Wales 2014 to 2015

The key findings in reported road traffic accidents:

  • road deaths increased by 4% compared with 2013, rising to 1,775
  • the number of people seriously injured increased by 5% to 22,807 in 2014
  • traffic volumes rose by 2.4% between 2013 and 2014. This is the highest rate of growth of motor vehicle traffic since 1996
  • the best current estimate, derived from the NTS data, is that the total number of road casualties in Great Britain annually, including those not reported to the police, is within the range 660 to 830 thousand with a central estimate of 740,000
  • once the weather has been taken into account, it is estimated that there would have been 43 fewer deaths in 2014 had the average temperature and rainfall been closer to the long term average
  • around 6.2% of drivers thought that they had driven whilst over the legal drink drive limit during 2014 to 2015. This proportion has remained broadly unchanged since 2012 to 2013
