Royal Awards recognise achievements in road safety management

14 December 2017

A number of organisations have been awarded a Prince Michael International Road Safety Award for achievements and innovations in the field of road safety management. They were presented with their awards at an annual ceremony which took place at The Savoy, London.

The awards recognise outstanding achievement and innovation worldwide with the most outstanding examples of international road safety initiatives given public recognition through the scheme.

The awards for road safety management were:

Automobile Club of Moldova - Safe Driving for Life

In 2013 a Safe Driving for Life campaign was launched by Automotive Club of Moldova, EASST and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development.

The resulting Occupational Road Safety Working Group for Chisinau has resulted in improvements in public transport, fleet management and the road safety record of many businesses including Gas Natural Fenosa.

Global Road Safety Partnership - Global Advocacy Programme

Evidence based legislation which is effectively enforced is at the heart of successful road traffic casualty reduction. However only 7% of the world’s population is covered by adequate laws which address key behavioural risk factors.

By utilising a US$2.6 million grant from Bloomberg Philanthropies, The Global Road Safety Partnership’s Global Advocacy & Grants Programme promotes the adoption and implementation of evidence-based policies in low-and middle income countries in order to achieve long term and sustainable reductions in road traffic deaths and injuries.

The Global Road Safety Facility hosted by the World Bank Group

The GRSF is a global funding partnership to scale-up scientific and management capacity for road safety in low and middle-income countries. It provides grants and leverages existing and new investments for countries, The World Bank, MDBs, and partner organisations of the UNRSC.

GRSF strives to reduce deaths and injuries from road crashes by offering comprehensive assistance around road safety management and delivery through funding support, technical advice and knowledge products. Working with partners and housed in the World Bank it was established in 2006.

The State of Utah - Road Safety Advocacy

The State of Utah has shown outstanding leadership being the first U.S.state:

  • To pass lifesaving .05 BAC legislation despite active opposition from well-funded opposition.
  • To design and implement an innovative management tool-UPlan that provides real time information built on a common GPS data base that enables unique, robust safety management and fosters unprecedented collaboration among stakeholders.
  • To adopt US RAP star rating and safety investment protocols and integrate it fully into the state’s road upgrading system.
