The Alliance receives prestigious road safety award

13 December 2017

The Global Alliance of NGOs for Road Safety (the Alliance) has been honoured with a Prince Michael International Road Safety Award . The award is one of the most prestigious in the global road safety world and the Alliance is extremely proud to be one of this year’s recipients.

The Alliance received the award for its efforts through the Alliance Empowerment Program to increase the quality of member NGOs work and to strengthen their ability to plan, identify funding, implement, and evaluate relevant advocacy activities that lead to community mobilization, press attention, and legislative change.

The Empowerment Program is the Alliance’s flagship capacity building program. Funded and supported by FedEx Corp. (NYSE: FDX), it is a multi-year program incorporating face-to-face training, webinars, and mentoring. It uses in-house expertise to enable stronger, more experienced members of the Alliance to share their skills and knowledge with others in the member community.

Launched in 2016 and informed by a learning needs assessment, the program is already demonstrating an impact. Graduates have so far been instrumental in the implementation of a national seat belt law in Tunisia, which saw road deaths fall within the first month, and a new law in the Philippines requiring children to wear helmets on motorcycles. Initial results from the program are documented in the Alliance’s action brief “Walking the Talk”.

“We are extremely honored to receive this award and humbled by the recognition, which we believe also belongs to all our members who each day strive to make a difference and achieve the Sustainable Development Goals for Road Safety,” said Lotte Brondum, Executive Director, the Global Alliance of NGOs for Road Safety.

“Through our FedEx Cares program and Road Safety initiative, FedEx is committed to making roads safer worldwide,” said David J. Bronczek, President and Chief Operating Officer, FedEx Corp. He added:

“In 2015, FedEx committed to fund and support the Alliance Empowerment Program as a means to equip NGOs to play their part in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. On behalf of more than 400,000 FedEx team members across the globe, congratulations to the Global Alliance of NGOs for Road Safety on this prestigious award. This award and initial results from the program demonstrate that the Alliance is achieving its objectives and strengthening the road safety NGO community.”
