20's Plenty Conference 2023

07 December 2023 Edinburgh City Chambers

A one-day conference taking place in December will discuss the national 20mph limit set by Wales in September and the plans for rolling out 20mph in Scotland by 2025.

Organised by 20’s Plenty , the event takes place at the City of Edinburgh Council Chambers on 7 December.

On 17 September, Wales became the first UK country to adopt a default 20mph speed limit. Under the change, most roads which had a 30mph speed limit switched to 20mph. It followed four years of work between the Welsh Government and local authorities, police and road safety experts to design a change in law.

Delegates will hear from Lee Waters MS, Wales’ deputy minister for climate change, and Kaarina Ruta, transport assistant, Welsh Local Government Association.

Meanwhile, the Scottish Government has committed to giving all appropriate roads in built up areas a speed limit of 20mph by 2025.

The agenda also features presentations from the 20mph cities of Edinburgh and London, as well as from Scottish Borders Council.

The European Transport Safety Council will give an international perspective on 30km/h (18.5mph) limits, while public health professionals will highlight the influence of street speeds on population health.
