Driverless vehicles demand bespoke control rooms

11 March 2020

Story by Guy Campos for AV magazine.

Crossover AV is supplying bespoke control room solutions, together with event and meeting technology, to the world’s most advanced urban testing lab for driverless vehicles in London.

The Smart Mobility Living Lab (SMLL) is the world’s most advanced urban testbed of its kind for connected and autonomous vehicles (CAVs), known in layman’s terms as “driverless vehicles”. The lab uses 24km of public and private roads in London to develop and validate new mobility and transport technologies.

The SMLL lets users test CAV technology safely and responsibly in two different environments. A site in The Royal Borough of Greenwich allows more advanced testing and trials in a complex real-world environment, while a Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park environment offers a more open, campus-like setting. The interplay between these two environments gives testers the opportunity to build and learn from two distinct but connected datasets, helping them to refine business models and attract investment more quickly. The lab is also fostering a collaborative research ecosystem, bringing together experience and expertise, ranging from technology providers to academics, and tackling questions about the future of mobility through a Shared Research Programme.
