World unites to halt death and injury on the road

13 May 2011

In excess of 300 organisations registered events to launch the Decade of Action

Many international launches featured Presidents and Prime Ministers, from Cameroon to Iceland, Indonesia, Mali, Mexico, Namibia, Niger, Slovenia, Sri Lanka and the United Kingdom, among others. Of the high-level national events, many served as opportunities to issue concrete action plans for the Decade. Many of these are perfectly in line with the Global Plan developed by the UN Road Safety Collaboration of which RoadSafe is a member.

Even more national landmarks were illuminated with the road safety tag than had been anticipated. These include in Argentina, El Obelisco of Buenos Aires; in Australia, Brisbane City Hall and the Sydney Harbour Bridge; in Brazil, the Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio de Janeiro and the Botanic Gardens in Curitiba; in Canada, the CN Tower in Toronto; in Poland, the Palace of Culture and Science in Warsaw; in Russian Federation, Moscow State University; in Sri Lanka, the World Trade Center in Colombo; in Switzerland, the Jet d'Eau in Geneva; in the United Kingdom, Trafalgar Square in London; in the United States, Times Square in New York City; and in Viet Nam, the Dong Xuan Market in Hanoi. Visuals of these illuminations have circulated the world, and we invite you to view some of the photos of these on the Decade of Action Flickr site.
