High-level Meeting of the UN General Assembly on Global Road Safety 30 June – 1 July 2022

24 March 2022

A High-level Meeting (HLM) of the UN General Assembly on Global Road Safety under the overall theme “ The 2030 horizon for road safety: securing a decade of action and delivery”, will be held in New York on 30 June – 1 July 2022, back-to-back with the High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development. Following three previously held Ministerial Conferences on Road Safety (2020 Sweden, 2015 Brazil, 2010 Russian Federation), this HLM will be the most significant political gathering held on global road safety to date.

As one of only a handful of previous HLMs to ever address a specific public health concern, Member States and their partners will seek to mobilize political leadership, address gaps and challenges, promote multisectoral and multi-stakeholder collaboration, and assess the progress made in implementing the Global Plan for the Decade of Action at national and municipal levels. These discussions will contribute to documenting progress in attaining the Decade of Action target.

The meeting will include representatives of Member States ideally at the level of Heads of State and Government; parliaments; city governments; relevant UN entities; civil society, non-governmental and youth-led organizations; academia; professional associations; and the private sector. The resolution also dictates the format of the HLM, with high-profile opening and closing sessions, statements by Member States, and up to three multi-stakeholder panel discussions.

The HLM will approve a concise and action-oriented political declaration agreed in advance by consensus through intergovernmental negotiations, to be submitted by the President of the General Assembly for adoption by the UN General Assembly. The Governments of Côte d’Ivoire and the Russian Federation have been tasked with leading these negotiations.
