Largest US Municipal Fleet to adopt FIA Road Safety Index

4 July 2025

The FIA Road Safety Index is a new index aiming to increase companies and organisations’ insights on the impact of their operations on road safety and to help them report on their ambitions, actions, and results.

New York City Department of Citywide Administrative Services (DCAS) will be the first municipal fleet in the world to adopt the international framework for measuring and improving road safety performance.

DCAS operates the largest municipal fleet in the United States, covering nearly 29,000 owned and leased vehicles, and will set a new global benchmark for public-sector accountability on the roads through the Index. Developed by the FIA, supported by the FIA Foundation, the FIA Road Safety Index helps organizations assess the safety impact of their operations, report on their safety footprint, identify gaps, and implement long-term improvements.

Crashes on roads cost the U.S. economy more than $340 billion annually and remain a top cause of workplace fatalities — with transportation-related incidents accounting for nearly 40% of occupational deaths. The FIA Road Safety Index provides a standardized way for organizations to monitor and reduce this toll through data and accountability.
