Work related road safety reaches global agenda

23 March 2009

RoadSafe was represented at the first International Conference on Road Safety at Work.

Hosted by the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and partners including the World Health Organization, the event proved to be a huge success and was well represented by the business, research and policy- making communities. There was clear recognition that occupational road safety makes up a substantial proportion of the road toll and of occupational injuries and deaths, and that targeted initiatives can play a significant role in improving general road safety around the globe.

The conference delegates, from over 40 countries, reached a broad consensus for the need to adopt a systems-based approach to at-work road safety engaging all stakeholders, as well as better surveillance data to identify purpose of journey in road safety statistics. Such an approach is available on our new FleetSafe web site.

It was agreed that the business case was of great importance; the RoadSafe managed Driving for Better Business Campaign was showcased as a novel strategy for communicating the business benefits of sound risk management policy.
