Safer Road Use programmes win Royal Awards
Three Safer Road Use programmes win Prince Michael International Road Safety Awards:
Kent County Council - Young Driver & Passenger Programme is designed to empower the learner driver, the novice driver and the young passenger to make safer choices when they get into a car. This on-line virtual programme is facilitated by young people and covers the causation of crashes, as well as strategies to reduce them. Increasing knowledge and understanding, irrespective of where the young person sits in the vehicle, we empower safer choices and reduce the participants willingness to engage in violator behaviours and their risk of being involved in a crash. Launched in 2021, it has reached over 16,000 young people.
Good Egg Safety Community Interest Company - Advanced Child Seat Training Programme strategy is to train public sector and emergency service personnel in the safe selection and use of child car seats. Many of whom engage directly with hundreds of parents and carers annually. By training certified Safety Advisors who become equally ’confident and competent’ to offer direct support and advice within their own communities, knowledge and expertise is increased to benefit the wider community. The programme is supported by the UK Department for Transport and has united leading organisations in road safety, retail, child seat manufacture, and road safety charities, to leverage their collective knowledge and expertise.
Mobility and Accessibility for Children in Australia is a national programme to improve safe road use for children and young people with disability. It has introduced an innovative capacity-building and awareness programme advancing the rights of children and young people with disability to safe and equitable transport. Through applying a social model approach, the programme focuses on strengthening policies and systems, advancing knowledge and driving innovation to address systemic barriers.
The $2.4 m programme funded by the Australian Government Department of Social Services was launched in 2019. It has proved effective in improving health professionals’ knowledge and skill, with families experiencing improved access to products and supports for their child’s road safety needs.
