Sentencing Council launches new consultation

22 February 2024

The Sentencing Council has launched a consultation on new and revised motoring-related guidelines which will run until 22 May.

The Council is proposing four offence-specific guidelines for aggravated vehicle taking offences, covering variations of that offence where dangerous driving takes place, where damage results, and where injury or death are caused. The Council is also revising the offence-specific guideline for vehicle registration fraud, which dates back to 2008, to take into account changes in the law. Following responses to an earlier consultation, the Council is also putting forward an overarching guideline for driver disqualification. There are further minor and technical amendments being proposed to motoring guidelines, which are all set out in the consultation document.

The proposed guidelines aim to promote consistency of approach in sentencing these offences and will complete the Sentencing Council’s package of new and revised motoring offences guidelines, following the publication in 2023 of guidelines for causing death by dangerous driving and other offences.
