Africa and Asia Pacific Road Safety Observatories win prestigious award.

The Africa and Asia Pacific Road Safety Observatories have won a prestigious Prince Michael International Road Safety Award.

The World Bank Global Road Safety Facility (GRSF) is partnering with FIA, ITF, Africa Union, Africa Development Bank, SSATP, Asia Development Bank, UNACE, UNESCAP and others to deliver the multinational Africa Road Safety Observatory and the Asia Pacific Road Safety Observatory. These observatories improve road safety data, better informing road safety interventions, as well as allowing for country to country learnings and providing a friendly, collaborative yet motivating environment for enhanced road safety delivery. Both observatories are already working with many country members.

The multinational Africa Road Safety Observatory (ARSO) and a multinational Asia Pacific Road Safety Observatory (APRSO) are modelled on the proven success of other observatories aorund the world including the Latin American Observatory (OISEVI). These observatories deliver many valuable outcomes beyond enhanced road cash data: a deeper regional collaboration across many countries, an enhanced shared regional database of agreed recorded details, friendly collaboration, cross-country learnings as well as learning from experts who contribute their time and expertise, a competitive yet collaborative benchmarking of country performances, and improved data stronger commitments to road safety, as well as global and regional monitoring of the problem and performance.

GRSF (UK Aid funding) has committed US$2.3million to ARSO and APRSO. GRSF is also developing comprehensive training in data processes and usage, improved data systems in several cities (Mumbai and Ho Chi Minh City) and developing in several countries (another US$2m from Total Foundation, Bloomberg Philanthropies, Quality Infrastructure Investment Grant). Other partners provide funding and in-kind support totalling US$1.5million+
