DfT and HSE want fleet views on driving for work guidance

A survey has been launched for fleets to have their say on how driving for work guidance from the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) and Department for Transport (DfT) can be improved.

One in three (29%) of all road fatalities and more than one in five (21%) of all casualties occur in driving-for-work collisions, research has shown.

The study, conducted on behalf of Roadsafe and Highways for England, found more deaths occur from at-work road trips than at the workplace, despite the dangers posed by industries such as construction, farming and mining.

Although the risks associated with driving cannot be completely controlled, says the HSE, an employer has a responsibility to take all reasonable steps to manage these risks and do everything reasonably practicable to protect people from harm in the same way as they would in the workplace.

The HSE and DfT produced joint guidance in 2014, INDG382: Driving at Work, to help duty holders manage work-related road risk. 

However, in recent years there have been significant developments in driving technologies and practices that have brought into question the currency of this guidance, it says.

The HSE wants to hear from fleet decision-makers and their drivers across all industries, including construction, to help identify how INDG382 can be improved in terms of relevance, currency and accessibility.
