Enabling safe adoption of automated vehicles through best practice

12 June 2024

Self-driving technologies are advancing daily with a rapidly increasing number of trials and operational deployments of CAVs across the world. As such, there is an urgent need for new standards and guidance to support both current and future deployments of AVs.

With this in mind, BSI commissioned this engagement and research project in order to investigate and explore industry demand for a more flexible and rapidly evolving standard for MRMs and MRCs. As described in the following pages, the result of the engagement is that a general framework is urgently required, to anticipate emerging standards for specific scenarios and, include the variety of increasingly complex MRMs and MRCs and their risks.

This BSI report outlines the framework proposed as a result of the engagement, based on the risks associated with both the manoeuvres and stopped conditions and considers the nature of the event that triggers the MRM. It also includes recommendations and guidance for developers and commercial companies in the global AV industry, researchers, and regulatory agencies.
