ImagineLaw receives Prince Michael International Road Safety Award for work on speed limit setting and enforcement

His Royal Highness Prince Michael of Kent recently awarded the prestigious Prince Michael International Road Safety Award to ImagineLaw, a non-profit, public interest law organization based in Manila, Philippines, for its work on improving speed limit setting and enforcement in the Philippines.

For over 30 years, the Award has been given to groups and individuals with outstanding achievements and innovations that improve road safety around the world.

This year, ImagineLaw received the Award in recognition of its policy advocacy efforts that led to the issuance of Joint Memorandum Circular No. 2018-001 by the Department of Transportation, the Department of Public Works and Highways, and the Department of the Interior and Local Government. The Circular guides local government units in classifying roads and setting appropriate speed limits, a mandate of cities and municipalities under the Land Transportation and Traffic Code.

To date, ImagineLaw has conducted capacity-building trainings on speed limit setting for over 500 councilors from different cities and municipalities nationwide. ImagineLaw has also supported local governments in drafting local road safety policies, leading to the enactment of at least 19 speed limit ordinances and four comprehensive local road safety codes, with more speed limit ordinances underway.

ImagineLaw also trained law enforcers nationwide on best practice speed enforcement, in partnership with the Department of Transportation and Land Transportation Office and with support from the Global Road Safety Partnership and United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP) under the UN Road Safety Fund.

“While we are deeply honored to be recognized for our efforts, the award is a testament to how civil society organizations and government agencies can and do come together to make our road safety laws work for the people. The award inspires us to scale up our work in making Philippine roads safer for all,” said ImagineLaw’s Executive Director Sophia Monica San Luis.
