Traffic accidents in Malawi: Special focus on the role of alcohol

This virtual seminar aims to present the key findings and recommendations for the study conducted jointly by the Kamuzu Central Hospital, Norwegian Institute of Public Health and the Oslo University Hospital, which was funded by UK Aid through the Global Road Safety Facility hosted by the World Bank.

The aims of this study are to:

  • generate new knowledge about road traffic injuries in Malawi and the extent to which traffic accidents are related to alcohol use
  • increase capacity to conduct alcohol-testing
  • develop a database for the findings, which in turn will form the basis for future policymaking to reduce traffic accidents

The seminar provides a platform for elevating discussions among health, transport and relevant stakeholder authorities involved in the National Road Safety Committee towards developing evidence-based policies to reduce road user risks related to alcohol, inform the design of traffic safety interventions, and further target education and awareness campaigns.

It will take place on the 9th December between 8:00am - 9:00am EST.
