Older Road User Safe Mobility Knowledge Programme

18 July 2019

RoadSafe will be working with UK road safety organisations including RSF, RAC Foundation, Agylisis, IHE and a number of international road safety institutions to develop an Older Road User Safe Mobility Knowledge Programme - a knowledge transfer programme to take forward the work of the Older Drivers Task Force by widening its scope to address the risks to older road users, concentrating on the most vulnerable. Initially it will also draw on national and international expertise to begin a mapping exercise examining the current policy landscape, with a view to clarifying the challenges, opportunities, barriers and research gaps to delivering fair, accessible and safe mobility in later life.

One programme we will be reviewing is The Singapore Silver Zone which won a Prince Michael International Road Safety Award in 2016. The scheme provides senior-friendly road safety features in residential areas with high senior resident populations, relatively higher accident rates involving seniors and closer proximity to amenities which seniors frequent. These features are customised to site conditions and remind motorists to slow down and look out for pedestrians, as well as urging senior pedestrians to exercise greater care when crossing the road.

Building on the positive feedback and success of existing Silver Zones, the Singapore Land Transport Authority (LTA) will expand the programme from an initial 35 to a total of 50 locations island-wide by 2023.
