Prince Michael International Awards 2024

11 December 2024

The 2024 Award winners came together in London in December for a workshop to showcase their achievements followed by the annual Award Cereomy during which HRH Prince Michael of Kent met the winners and presented his Premier Award   to Amend for its Safe Schools Africa programme

The overarching aim of  Safe Schools Africa is to reduce road traffic injury (RTI) rates among children who are at high risk, through the provision of safe road infrastructure in Africa.

The approach that Safe Schools Africa takes to achieve this overarching aim is to scale up the principles of SARSAI – Amend’s School Area Road Safety Assessments and Improvements programme - by embedding them in major government and development bank-financed roads projects. A multi-year population-based impact evaluation led by the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) found that SARSAI results in an over 26% reduction in injuries among children as well as a reduction in the severity of injuries that do occur.

By mid-2026, Safe Schools Africa aims to:
• Have provided support on at least ten major roads projects
• Complete at least five demonstration projects, improving pedestrian infrastructure to create Safe School Zones
• Bring onboard more partners

This partnership provides pro bono support to government roads agencies, which commonly lack the expertise and capacity needed to ensure that children and other vulnerable road users are considered in the design and construction of roads on multi-million dollar projects. The partnership also undertakes advocacy for improved road design and provides capacity building to governments and their consultants and contractors.
