Safe Schools Africa
Amend - Safe Schools Africa receives a Prince Michael International Road Safety Award for improving the safety of roads in Africa.
Amend delivers safe and healthy journeys and improved environments in developing countries, saving lives and making lives better.
Building on the successful award-winning School Area Road Safety Assessment and Improvement programme in nine countries across Africa, Amend's - Safe Schools Africa programme is set to reach even more countries as it becomes embedded in major government and development bank-financed projects. Support comes from The FIA Foundation and Agence Française de Dévelopement.
A multi-year population-based impact evaluation led by the United States Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) showed a 26% reduction in injuries among children as well as a reduction in the severity of injuries that did occur.
The program provides proven-effective, targeted technical assistance on roads projects in Sub-Saharan Africa to ensure that roads are designed and built safely for children and other vulnerable road users. In doing so, it will deliver safe and healthy journeys to school for children across the continent while building capacity for long-term, systemic change in the processes that currently result in roads that kill African children at rates much higher than their peers in wealthy countries.
